Happy September! Time to get cosy

Welcome to my FIRST EVER newsletter! I’m both excited and overwhelmed by the idea of sending my thoughts directly to your inbox. August was a whirlwind of a month for me (where did the summer go?). I quit my job with every intention of growing a freelance career, to being offered a job in an industry I knew nothing about 3 days later. Part of me is a little sad I didn’t quite get to spread my wings, BUT it’s been a joy to put together my website and create some content for my lovely readers. I’ve heard some of my friends talk about implementing tips from my Digital Minimalism post, and it has made me grin from ear to ear!

I’ll be playing with the format of the newsletter as time goes on, but at least to start I’ll be hitting my current top books (which I only recommend if I’m at least halfway through it myself), top blog posts from the previous month, new art pieces, and a PDX highlight for the locals. Bear with me as I get into a groove, and I hope you enjoy!

Have you ever heard of the Danish term hygge? It depicts a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. For me, part of creating that vibe is curling up with a blanket, a cup of tea, and a great book. Below are a few that have been in my hands this last month that I’d like to share.

This is a no nonsense book about how an ABC news correspondent stumbled upon meditation - something he never would have thought would be part of his day to day. He “lost his mind” on live television in 2004 and this book is a journey into the murky waters of the self-help industry, eventually finding the science-backed practice of meditation. This quick read is funny and straightforward - I highly recommend!

If you’re less into the journey and more about the “how-to” he wrote a follow-up book: “Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics”.

If you give this book a chance, I guarantee it will blow your mind.

Daniel Kahneman, the renowned psychologist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, takes you on a groundbreaking tour of the mind and explains the two systems that drive the way we think. System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative, and more logical.

The impact of overconfidence on corporate strategies, the difficulties of predicting what will make us happy in the future, the profound effect of cognitive biases on everything from playing the stock market to planning our next vacation―each of these can be understood only by knowing how the two systems shape our judgments and decisions.

This is one I recently picked up the library, but I highly recommend getting your own copy if this appeals to you. Part road map, part journal, it helps readers navigate their personal path through authentic yoga practices, provocative thinking, music, art, good food, eco-friendly activities, and more. It dives into what yoga is beyond the bendy poses you see on Instagram.

Not only that, it is a beautifully put together book. The images and design are gorgeous!

PDX Highlight

If you are in the Portland area, I recommend checking out Kruger’s Farm out on the beautiful Sauvie Island. They have events and concerts throughout the year, but their al fresco farm to plate dinners (and brunches) will be wrapping up at the end of September. My good friend Alicia recommended them to me last summer and I finally gave it a try a couple weeks ago. The event caps at around 40 people and everyone sits outside at a long family style dinner table, while the team brings out course after course of deliciously fresh, in season, local food. It was incredible. We even had the head farmer come out and tell us about his love for the farm to plate events and how excited he was for fall :)
