Let’s Celebrate Together!

Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year in terms of daylight hours. It is technically on the 20th this year, but for a variety of reasons we are celebrating on the 19th (close enough, eh?). The changing of seasons is a time for reflection and looking forward to what is to come.

This is a gathering of wonderful humans to welcome the summer, acknowledge Juneteenth, and connect with one another. You can expect a delightful outdoor dinner with contributions of deliciousness from attendees. Fire pit, music, great food, libations, good conversation, and laughter.

There is an outdoor reflection in commemoration of Juneteenth hosted by Afro Outdoor. This invites you to take time in nature during the day to reflect on what freedom means to you. We will play with this idea during out gathering, but I invite you to reflect on it individually ahead of time, if you choose.

the Details

When? Saturday, June 19th at 5:30 pm until dark

Where? Penner House: 8950 N Courtenay Ave, Portland, OR 97203

Covid Safety: By this date, most folks who are planning to get a vaccine will be fully immune. I am one of the last in my group of friends and I’ll be good to go by June 11th! This will be outdoor (weather permitting), and if a mask would make you feel comfortable in this setting, please assert that boundary. Since we will be sharing a meal together, there is some amount of risk. If this pushes against a boundary you have, please consider opting out of the gathering. I am keeping an eye on Multnomah County’s guidelines, and we should be in the “Low Risk” category by this date! I estimate the number of people to be between 8 and 16.

Rules of engagement

Think of these as playful agreements we have with each other as part of creating this experience together.

  1. Wear something that you feel awesome in. It might be an outfit that’s been sitting in your closet waiting to come out since last year!

  2. Show up ready to interact with fellow amazing humans.

  3. Assert and respect any boundaries (COVID-related or otherwise) you need to have fun.
